		The Situation The Alexander Turnbull Library, the research library within the National Library of New Zealand, has an exceptional collection of priceless rare books dating from as far back as 1470. Library staff are naturally very proud of this collection and consider it an honour and a privilege to protect it.

		The Impact To preserve this valuable asset, the room is temperature and humidity controlled and the cabinetry designed so that the books are sheltered if the sprinkler system is triggered. However the risk remained that in a seismic event the books could fall from the shelves and sustain water and impact damage.

		The Solution Seismic Restraints NZ was commissioned to provide an easy-to-use restraint system. Over 600 custom made Book Keeper Bars were fitted to the shelves, with central pivot points enabling the bars to be lifted, held in place with a magnetic loop system and the books removed without disturbance. To ensure all bars would be level and consistent, custom jigs were fabricated. Installation went smoothly and was completed within the estimated time of one week. In an earthquake the books will now stay safely in place.
